dear friends,
can some guru tell me about default file ownership and permissions in ubuntu and/or debian? i know fixing each of them is not possible but i want to get as close as possible, after messing up permissions while trying to read/ write from one into another distro.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

ps: i dont care about security but i cant run some applications, e.g. pppd for using VPTCL hangs up due to being run as non-root. Other issues exist too.

1. All Directories at / have 755 permission.
2. Files under /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/local/sbin must have permission 755
You can get info which directory is used for what purpose and set permission accordingly.

I will try my luck at that. I guess setting permissions to / through -R wont be a good idea, as this very command played havoc. I will rather go for each directory individually as you mentioned.

nops it didn't work out.
i couldn't run many application while others kept crashing.
finally i did a clean install.
aptoncd helped me recover some installed applications so that i didn't have to download them all.
i had ubuntu desktop and alternate iso (read how i got these at www.shahfaisal.wordpress.com) but meanwhile shipit cds also arrived.
