Well both yum and up2date are good but have got drawbacks.

Yum is much efficient than up2date when it comes to downloading packages and server avilablitliy...but up2date's interface is superior than that of yums.

some problems with up2date, as mentioned in the article, include, server load, unavailablity of of servers, server timeouts, package availablility etc.

yum's inteface on the other hand is not as good as up2date's

Basically i update my packages, by letting yum or update make a list of updated packages available. Then i go through that list and download the packages available from the web through a site like rpm.pbone.net or rpmfind.net, which are basically rpm searching websites/rpm reppositries by searcing for them there and downloading them manually.

I use apt-rpm. I know yum has a lot of advantages over apt but I use apt because.

o Familiar commandline: Works on our Debian servers at work and Redhat at home.
o Cool interfaces: The Synaptic interface for apt is above and beyond the capabilities of up2date.
