FOSSFP: Free and Open Source Software Foundation of Pakistan®
FOSSFP is a non-profit, charitable ICT foundation registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, Government of Pakistan. FOSSFP is assisting the enhancement of the abilities and capacity of individuals, groups, institutions, organizations, societies, and government in Pakistan by using Free/Open Source Software Solutions (FOSS) for their sustained economic and social development. FOSSFP is a licensing body for developing, advocating and protecting intellectual capital in the region by devising National Free and Open Source Software Licensing and Software Engineering Standards in order to establish standardized FOSS licensing and engineering practices in the region.
FOSSFP shapes its activities around Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) technologies and applications according to the vision set forth by the International Open Source Network an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Asia Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP).
What is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)?
Free/Open Source Software refers to computer programs whose source codes are open for other parties to review, comment, refine, and add to. Anyone can take the programs, understand how they work and use them without asking for permission. This approach is often quoted as a good model for producing resilient software. The "open" concept allows further customization of the software to user's needs.
The well-known GNU/Linux operating system is an example of such a Free/Open Source Software, GNU/Linux uses GPL, or General Public License, which guarantees that the source code will remain "open".
The word "free" in FOSS does not refer to the price of the software but rather to the freedoms or rights of users of the software i.e. their rights to run, study, redistribute and improve the software.
Why FOSS?
-Reduced costs - affordable software for individual, enterprise, and government
-Less dependence on imported technology
-Universal access through mass software rollout without costly-implications
-Ability to customize software to local languages and cultures
-Lowered barriers to entry for software businesses
-Participation in global network of software development
