Try tcpdump while you are trying to telnet to 8080. Turn full verbosity on. It might help to debug the issue. Sounds crazy but have you tried resetting the router?

I beg to differ. In our experience, we had the best experience with reiserfs on aufs. My cache at times have quite a low number of incoming requests where diskd becomes really slow. LFS is the correct answer. You have the choice and the extreme flexibility at hand. BTW you can shrink Slackware 10.1 to less than a 100 Megs as I have experienced.
