Yes it is possible with no problem but first thing is you upgrade your distribution. You can use fedore or ubuntu try most latest one.

Post by shahzor »

its possible but you need to try it first yourself then if you face some problem then ask some one to help you, i think you can't go asking a help like this where you don't want to do any thing, but need the sloution step by step, any how I would suggest first try it yourself then ask people.

thanks

dear brave heart

you have keep a very brave name for yourself as there is a movie with the same name but you are mixing things, do remember when you want to finish something please go one by one in this way the help which you will get is perfect, otherwise you yourself will be more worry and I really tell you something that don't go all the time asking for every thing try it first yourself then ask some body when you face a problem which can't be searched through google or other search engine.

any how can you send you cache.log file and squid.conf file first we should get the squid working then we go to the clients.

note:- please don't call me sir, I am not a sir and don't to be even.
thanks

just copy its squid.conf file somewhere safe time to time after any changes you made in it. That will be enough and you taking backing of cache is not a good practice.

Mr. B H
for a good clean squid install and conf please refer to:
http://www.brennan.id.au/11-Squid_Web_Proxy.html

I agree with x2oxen. backing up your cache is not a good idea plus you really have no need to. Try and make a clean squid.conf and make sure that you make a copy using "cp" everytime you want to tinker with it.

CP usage:
for my case squid config is in /etc/squid/ on my Debian 2.6 server
in terminal:
==>cd /etc/squid (prompt control should show /etc/squid)
==>sudo cp /etc/squid/squid.conf /etc/squid/squid.conf.backup
Control should ask for root password.
Now if contents of /etc/squid listed using "ls". One should see a "squid.conf" and a "squid.conf.backup"

to edit i would prefer a CLE like "VI" or "NANO".

a good control interface for your server can be http://www.webmin.com/

Hope this helps. If you need a rather automated way of the above backup then i can show you how we can use shell scripts along with scheduled execution using "Cron" http://www.linuxcommand.org/man_pages/cron8.html

Lets start from here and see where it goes. Further questions please post.
