Asterisk is a voip solution, based on Open source. While Digium is the company, who manufacture IPTelephony cards which can be implemented through this software. Asterisk works like a PBX implemented on Linux.
If you haven't any understanding of Voice Over IP than it is difficult for you to understand. Just imagine turning your Personal computer into full featured PABX can be done through Asterisk & Digium.
