NEED SUSE Linux CDS

Post by alishan »

Hello Guys!
I have been using Linux distros like Redhat9,Mandrake10,Lindows4 & most recently Ubuntu Linux.
I have heard a lot about Suse and everybody praises its KDE look & extended functionality.
I searched the CD in my nearby Market,I live in Lahore, but could,nt find any cd.
Is there any company in Lahore which could send me LINUX SUSE 10 cd & get the lowest acceptable amount once cds are delivered.
Waiting for some good response.

Hi
I have used all of the distros, you mentioned in your post, and I think Ubuntu is the best. If you like KDE you can install KDE in your ubuntu;
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Moreover, Suse does not have apt (like ubuntu). So if you are used to of ubuntu and apt, you will get bored with Suse in few days. Many people are talking about YAST, in Suse, but apt is way smarter, cooler and faster than YAST.
Thanks

Suse 10.0

Post by Saleemmarwat »

Dear Rana Tanveer ,

AOA,as per promise I am posting few of the things about Suse Linux here.

1. Any one downloading or purchasing Suse 10.0 CDs should be aware of the fact that there are two versions of it, The OSS Version ( which is available with Tariq Sahib of Linuxpakistan for 210 Rs) and Official Version which either you purchase from Novell or download it from their mirror sites. Keep in mind that OSS Version is just a test version and it is better to get the Official version which is stable version.

2. Suse 10.1 final version will be available in mid april 2006 on public mirrors as per informations given on www.distrowatch.com .

3. I am posting few links from where you can download different versions of Suse Linux. They are as under.

a) http://www.interknet.net/bt/

This link has torrent files for boxed versions ( the one you purchase from Novell ) of Suse Linux . Currently it has 9.2,9.3 & 10.0 versions available & hopefully soon they will upload 10.1 when it is released. You need to install ABC Torrent on windows or any torrent program in linux to download . Cable or DSL will be needed to download ISO files as they are mostly above three GB in size. Another important point , download DVD version only if you have a dual layer blank DVD available which can store data of upto 8 GB otherwise download routine 5 CDs version.

b) http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/

http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/

Above two are the links for biggest linux ISO files and you can download the 5cds or DVD versions of available Suse versions.

hope these iformations are of some help, lets wait for Suse 10.1 to be released to mirrror soon :)

Sorry I couldn't visit the forum for some time..
I got SUSE 10.0 on 2 Nov 2005, just after 20 days of its release..
I have sent it's copies to Lahore thrice to my fellows from Quetta..
I didnt saw this post, other wise I would have sent..
Keep in mind that OSS Version is just a test version and it is better to get the Official version which is stable version.
No Way, OSS version (which Tariq bhai has) contain Open Source software purely... And it is re distributeable.. But it doesnt have Video and MP3, WAVE support by default, U have to add.
while Trial version is not redistributeable and it contains many commercial and 3rd party closed source softwares, like Flash, Adobe Acrobat, Java and free demos of many commercial softwares (around 400 more)
I have Open Source version, but it doesnt take any time to turn it to full Commercial support by adding support for MP3, Video, Adobe PDF, JAVA etc..
A PC without LIN is like a Universe without Earth.
