I'm in the same boat. I bought the one with the broadcom chipset and low clock speed. I was only able to install the minimal version of dd-wrt, which gave me the exact same controls as the web interface that came with the router. I wanted to increase the signal strength, but that caused the router to drop packets randomly. Not at all acceptable. This Netgear router has WAY better signal strength and network throughput. I suppose one could buy a better dd-wrt supported router (the Buffalo routers are supposed to be very nice), but they don't fit my budget.
