Hi ... Its a Riddle for me at least.

Post by Dr-Munir »

There is a Riddle for me , at least for me , Farruckh or any one can help me Out?

I want to install Gentoo 2005.0 as a netwrok install, I know there is a profile called 2005.1 as well.

so I know Inorder to do that I will have to do this:

After I have Booted from The CD,

I have to issues more ir less these commands ( I may be missing some , Please Correct me )

Code: Select all

# sbin/ifconfig
what shall I do, because I will be connecting My PC to LAN of a netcafe probably. and mostly these netcafes run on Connection sharing basis.

Code: Select all

what shall I do here?
because the netcafes dont run a proxyserver, the one which I am familiar with, I am sure I dun need to do

Code: Select all

export http_proxy="http://proxy.name:8080"

and

export ftp_proxy ....

export RSYNC_proxy ... etc...
am I right ?

I think I will also dun have to do

Code: Select all

http://username:password@proxy.name:8080
so I think I am Clear ..

Do I need To run

Code: Select all

net-setup eth0

and

ifconfig eth0
?

I am extremely confused. because I need to install the latest snapshot of the Portage and if I continue to install from the CD It will take a lot time for me ,

can any one tell me in detail , step by step , about the latest way to install in a network envoironment/

and How to remove these variables so that the system then recognises ( after the modem has been Installed ) the modem , not the NIC.

will the simple solution be to remove the network card?

I know Most of you who have read this post will think I am being a crazy person , but I dont really know how to explain my problem .

simply put , let me try this way ,

I install gentoo by Connecting to a network . ( How Do I do It in a LAN with a single network sharing and NO proxy uSED..

Once I have Done This ( How Do I ask Gentoo to recognise my Modem not the NIC Now That I dont Need An NIC.

Please also keep in mind that the drivers of the modem willhave been installed .

Thanx

Why don't you go for gentoo base install 2005.x and then do emerge sync?it'll update the portage tree to the latest one. ( after emerge sync, emerge any package you want).

When emerge sync is done, it depends how you want to connect, through HTTP, FTP, or RSYNC.

- net-setup eth0 will setup all n/w ethernet confiuration. no need for ifconfig eth0

when you have done all your installation work, then you can
ifconfig eth0 down
to disable the network card (LAN).
it all depends on the routes you define for network traffic, you can have both modem and LAN and route traffic through either modem or LAN

Which part is buggingy you ?

I did what you suggested but initially It was very difficult to get connected to netwrok,

Allah Jaanta hay kis tarah connect hua.

I do not want to install from CD and the do emerge sync because I have had a problem with the gcc-3.3.6 everytime I did my system upgrade from emerge --sync...

so This time I want to completely install it a fresh .. Because gss breakup gave me alot of ehadaches and almost all of the solutions on http://forums.gentoo.org didnt help me at all..

so I wanted To know , Once the CPU is physicallly connected to the LAN , How to let the system Know that and when the required process is over , how to get it back to know its Network-less envoironment

I mean I want to install the latest Gentoo via a network, That is .

Better go for 2006.0 x86, only thing you have to remember while doing any linux installation, what difference this step will make to installation. : )
