Debian 4.0 Etch

The Debian Project is pleased to announce the official release of Debian GNU/Linux version 4.0, code-named 'etch'. Debian GNU/Linux is a free operating system which supports a total of eleven processor architectures and includes the KDE, GNOME and Xfce desktop environments. It also features cryptographic software and compatibility with the FHS v2.3 and software developed for version 3.1 of the LSB. Using a fully integrated installation process, Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 comes with out-of-the-box support for encrypted partitions.

This release is now available for eleven computer architectures for more details please read this.

Downloading and further testing around the world is going on. There are minor issues reported here, as per Linux Pakistan practice we will wait till release 4.0.x minor version is released by Debian Project. This will be Insha Allah available in market as well as from Linux Pakistan

With Etch becoming stable the Sarge has been moved to archives. Current unstable is Sid and new testing version is Lenny.

Debian Edu / Skolelinux 3.00 based upon Etch is undergoing testing for final release. Once Skolelinux 3.0 is ready it will be released on Pressed CD to be distributed by Karachi Computers, Rainbow Center, Karachi and available at shops all over Pakistan at regular prices.

Debian 4.00 Etch comes with 18000+ application totaling 13.1GB and 11 Architectures.

This will need 21 CD's or 3 DVD's.

Not yet final but we plan to release single install CD and ISO's on DVD to faciltate instalation using HardDisk / local mirror. Do read this for more info.

Please recommend / suggest HowTo Tutorial which we can recommend for newbie to follow for netinstall. If any one feel like writing new tutorial from scratch or willing to modify/improve existing [ preferred ] Tutoral / HowTo, please post here or contact me through email.
