Try tcpdump while you are trying to telnet to 8080. Turn full verbosity on. It might help to debug the issue. Sounds crazy but have you tried resetting the router?

I beg to differ. In our experience, we had the best experience with reiserfs on aufs. My cache at times have quite a low number of incoming requests where diskd becomes really slow.
