It appears that you have not configured this system's networking details.
To resolve this, you need to

1. Login as root
2. Run netconfig
3. Provide networking details
4. Restart networking using /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart

Reiserfs is a wrong choice.
Its good for multiple smaller files but, it had stability issues.
Last time I used reiserfs, it crashed and cost me everything on that partition.

Instead of directly jumping to compiling things, first try searching the forums for help. My recommendation is that you should not go with the recompile thing.
