alternatives?
Dialup is not a high speed connection and mostly a land line is required for it. VPTCL and Dialog are proxy based just like a broad band cable net so can't get direct Internet IP using them. Are there any ISPs that provide wireless broadband with similar features to DSL?

MPEGs really.
.DAT files are really MPEG files. Some times linux media players get touchy about the .dat extension. Just rename the file to have the .mpg extension and it should play fine on Linux.

permissions problem
Normally KPPP automatically adds and deletes DNS entries in resolv.conf, you don't have to do anything. It might be an issue that you are using a non-root account while using KPPP and your resolv.conf has permissions only for root. Check it out.

Wrong Title for the thread?
This thread should have been given a more appropriate title. If you want to use linux on top of VFAT (FAT32) or NTFS then there are linux distros that let you do that (puppy linux being one of them). I wonder what you mean when you say Journaling file system. FAT is not journaling file system. If yo...

simple
If you want to install slax instead of slackware just do this
boot with a windows 98 cd, issue the command
fdisk /mbr
then reboot with slax and install it
tell slax to install itself in the previous linux partition you had for slackware.
